Chi Alpha Campus Ministries was founded in 1953 at Missouri State University, formerly Southwest Missouri State University, and is on over 300 campuses throughout the U.S. and around the world.
Chi Alpha chartered at SMU in the fall of 1995. We are a movement of college age men and women earnestly following Jesus. No, we’re not a fraternity or sorority. We are a Christian student organization and we invite everyone to be a part, regardless of your background. We meet on and off campus in groups of varying size and style. Our gatherings are informal, infused with music and interaction, and cover topics from relationships to the nature of truth. These meetings are opportunities for students to meet God, each other, and the needs of the community.
Chi Alpha is affiliated with the Assemblies of God but functions inter-denominationally (all are welcome regardless of church background). We see a spirit-empowered, diverse community of believers on the university campus, declaring in word and lifestyle their faith in Jesus Christ, equipped to fulfill their purpose in God’s global plan.
HOW DID WE GET OUR NAME?
In the Bible, the Apostle Paul wrote, “therefore we are Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us. we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God” (2 Cor 5:20). Inspired by this verse, we choose the phrase ‘christou apostoloi’, meaning ‘Christ’s sent ones,’ to represent who we are. The greek letters (X) and (A) are the initials of this phrase, which reminds us that we should live a life to reflect Jesus.
